The menu at this well-established spot ... defies a category, just like the sound system which offers everything from world beat to Willie Nelson. The cafes have many meatless entrees, as well as a signature New York strip steak, now using Piedmontese beef. Jerk chicken salad and roasted red pepper and garlic hummus are often on the list along with such dishes as pecan chicken and maple-cured salmon. Desserts are emphasized, with some of the best cheesecake around as well as carrot cake and a rich chocolate cake. Lorraine Platman doesn't like to put a label on her cuisine, though she sometimes calls it American Continental. A nice wine list accompanies the fare and the beverage list goes well beyond the expected, from fresh lemonade to hot apple cider to cappuccino and espresso.
